Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month 2020

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, also referred to as Latinx Heritage Month, MACAA is proud to celebrate the history, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans.

In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation establishing Hispanic Heritage Week. The one-week event was expanded to cover a 30-day period in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. This celebration is known by many as National Hispanic Heritage Month — lasting from September 15 to October 15.

"Hispanic" is a term that refers to native Spanish speakers, or those who have Spanish-speaking ancestry, while "Latino" is more frequently used to refer to anyone of Latin American origin or ancestry. The term “Latinx,” rather than Hispanic or Latino, represents people of Latin American origin or decent including indigenous, Brazilian, and other non-Spanish speakers in this celebration. “Latinx” is also used as a non-binary, gender non-conforming and gender-expansive alternative to Latino/a.
